Quitaque II **Lots of Photos** - 06-20-2009, 04:03 PM

I was trying to create a mood since that's what we felt while viewing this sidewalk museum town by going B&W or near B&W, i.e. going in or coming out of the "Twilight Zone". Maybe I should of just stuck with the color. Anyway, I found this town to be quite unique. In fact I noticed it while driving through but didn't stop. We turned around and came back just to walk the walks and take a few photos. Hope you enjoy.

Smile "End Of The Trail" - 06-20-2009, 06:32 PM

Looks like you shot just about everything there is to shoot. Interesting tidbit from the Texas Handbook:

"Charles Goodnight...introduced the name Quitaque, which he believed was the Indian word for "end of the trail." According to another legend the name was derived from two buttes in the area that resembled piles of horse manure, the real meaning of the Indian word. Another story is that the name was taken from the Quitaca Indians, whose name was translated by white settlers as "whatever one steals."'

I kinda like the middle explanation of the name best.

Thanks Rex. The population appears to be declining but the people that are there were very nice. At least the ones we saw were. I kinda wished we had stopped in Turkey, Texas now. There were some similarities but still different and the home of Bob Wills! The drive back to Childress on the two lane road was through some beautiful country and hardly any traffic.

The canyons around Quitaque is where the Comancheros used to sell the captives to the Comanches and Kiowas.
