The Panhandle Rain Forest????????????????????????????

I've driven across the Panhandle dozens of times. That's more vegetation and thicker and taller than anything I've seen from various highways.

Nope, not Palo Duro Canyon.

Another picture of the big cottonwood at the end of the path. The trunk is at least 10 feet in diameter!

Try a little further east. The first picture shows more trees that in all of Dallam County!

Here's another one of an old cottonwood stump and several of the trees in the background are Little River Walnuts.

Another hint. The big Cottonwood was a landmark on an old military road.

Could it be North of Amarillo I know there is an area that is wooded near a residential area have some friends that live in the area. This would be off the highway going towards Dumas.

What about over near Canadian? That's where they have the fall color tour and this looks like it might be pretty that time of the year.

Way to go. This is at Lake Marvin, 12 miles east of Canadian, Texas on the east side. This place is really lush and wet and very "unPanhandle like". I believe it is one of the crown jewels of the Texas Panhandle, and really something about the first of November.

Funny thing is that I've lived in the Panhandle (well, Amarillo) for 40 years and have been to Canadian only once and never to Lake Marvin, but having seen all that vegetation over there made an impression on me I guess. Sure didn't know anything about the old Cottonwood tree! Lucky guess!
