Identifying a place... north on 59 out of Houston - 10-22-2009, 01:08 PM

I was headed up to Marshall TX on Hwy 59 on Saturday morning and about 1.5-2 hrs north of Beltway 8 I went past a stretch of buildings on the right side of the highway that looked like the main street from an old western town, but with a lot of junk (antiques?) piled up around it (...hard to say what's junk and what's for sale at highway speed - - nothing negative intended or implied...). It seemed to be in an otherwise undeveloped area - - perhaps the outskirts of a small town.

So can anyone identify this particular location based on my quickly passing description?

Was there a windmill in the middle of the town?

Angelo, could have been, but I'm not sure... wouldn't want to bet one way or the other.

Tim, thanks for the more narrow locale to search... I'll look at the aerial photos to see if I can find it. Thanks.

If anyone else knows about it, please let me know.

Tim, you were very close... Saying Diboll made it worth going out to look on Google Maps and I found it. The rough address (according to Google) is 6855 U.S. 59, Burke, TX. Now I need to find out some more about it.

So, again, if someone knows about this place, let me know... Thanks.

If you recall, there is a similar collection of pseudo-old buildings on the east side of US287 in Grapeland. With a windmill. I wonder if they are related?

If this place is south of Diboll, Tx it was at one time a trades days location.
The owner also owns HOP&S ( a photo store and studio) in Lufkin, Texas. For a long time he was a news photographer for KTRE-TV in Lufkin. He is also the one who introduced me to photography some 40 plus years ago.

Actually, Larry, it is just north of downtown Diboll on the northbound side of 59. If you copy and paste the address I put a couple posts up into Google Maps, it will take you right there to it and you can use the street level view to see it. It could very well be that place - - like I said, it was filled up with stuff that could very easily be for sale. Thanks for the info.

It is likely to be a while before I am over in that direction again, unless one of our intrepid film crawl organizers plans something in that direction ...
