Looking to shoot a drilling rig West of I-10 - 01-26-2010, 02:07 PM

I'd like to find a working drilling rig to shoot somewhere within 100-150 miles of San Antonio. I need to get close enough to do some wide angle landscape shots without trespassing. Any and all suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Have maps will travel.

Cruise your area highways at night looking for lit rigs with stands of pipe leaning against the tower. If you are around Ft Worth ever they usually have a few off I-35 above Cabella's. The late night drive about is how I find them, they truly stand out against the horizon. The rigs here are drilling for natural gas

Usually it is best to do your night rig photos mid to late dusk. Sometime their derrick lighting is bright and harsh giving much flare against the Texas dark night sky.

I get called out by security at times but show them night rig shots and tell them I mud-logged back in the fifties. With that they smile and wave Bye. So far.

Not trying to be rude, but you are replying to posts that were originally made over a year ago. In some cases the people were on trips at that time, to specific areas.

Yep, a rickety old noob here. I just noticed the posting date after reading your reply. I consider your reply helpful not rude. There is a learning curve to posting and surfing here as well as tricks of the road.
