Fort Wolters (Mineral Wells) - 03-11-2010, 10:18 PM

Today was my second trip over to the abandoned Fort Wolters Army base. During the Vietnam war it was the Army's Primary Helicopter Training facility. Before that is was a US Army training camp and also housed German POW's during WWII. It is largely abandoned now with many of the original structures still standing. Here is my stab at kind of doing a "Yesterday & Today" theme. . .

One of the Camps Headquarters

When the base became a Nike Missile installation they held a parade. This comparison photo was taken in front of the Baker Hotel in downtown Mineral Wells.

Nice collection, Keith. That place remains something of a mystery even to many who have lived in this area many years. You've chronicled it well.

No Tom it is not fenced. There are a lot of buildings that are now occupied and some barracks have families in them, but a majority of the structures are vacant. Some may be fenced but many are accessible.

What a trip down memory lane. My dad was in the Texas National Guard horse cavalry in the '30s and spen summar camps at Camp Woltors. My brother and I both went to Camp Dallas at the old Camp Woltors when it was the summar camp for the Dallas High Schools ROTC in the late 50s and early 60s. We road the train from Dallas to the spur at Ft. Woltors. The Baker Hotel was still going strong them. Thanks for the memories.

I have many memories of Ft Wolters. Took my primary helicopter training there in 1965, did a tour in Viet Nam, then returned to Wolters as an instructor pilot. Later flew as a test pilot for Southern Airways as well.
