San Bernard NWR - TX Largest Live Oak Tree Walk/Shoot

Posted by krviera on another area of the forum but I thought it might get some more notice over here.

There will be a walk to the Texas state record Live Oak at the San Bernard NWR this coming Sat. Mar. 12 The group will leave at 9:00am from the refuge headquarters and will go until about noon. Need knee hight rubber boots to walk through a slough. About 3/4 mile walk each way, good opportunity to see hawks, owls, snakes and some migrants.

West Brazoria County - If coming from Houston go down Hwy 288 until FM 2004 in Lake Jackson, turn Right and stay on FM2004 past Clemens Prison Farm. Go straight through the traffic light (the road will turn into FM 2611) go over the San Bernard River Bridge and turn left onto FM2918. Go about a mile down and turn RIGHT on CR. 306 - the WLR will be on your Left down that road!

However I think krviera will be able to give better infomation on San Bernard and Brazoria WLR's - thats the expert in that area!.

The guys and gals out at the WLR found this one a couple of years ago and it ended up bigger than all the others. I am not sure where the other large tree is.

I meant to ask more when I first saw this post. The largest oak tree in Texas used to be on Goose Island. This is the one I thought of!! Maybe we should have a "measure-off"????

krviera here works for the National Wildlife Department so he would be the one to ask. When it comes to flowers, plants and wildlife he is one of the best out there for information! But this tree broke all State Records about 3-4 years ago!

I'd love to attend - but if it's that big, I'd be sneezing the rest of the year!

Now, if krviera can tell me there'll be no pollen, that's a different story!

I love large Oaks. Grew up in La. where there are plenty. This was shot on a Golf course in Kingsland, Texas. (Have no idea of the age) There is one across the fairway that is even larger.

A picture is worth a thousand words,
but it uses 1000 times the memory.
    And...it's harder to spellcheck!
