RFI: Guadalupe Mountains - 09-01-2011, 11:11 PM

I’m thinking about going to the Guadalupe Mountains in early November.

I’ve never been there before, so I’m seeking information about specific areas to photograph. If you’ve been there I’d appreciate as much detailed information as you can provide.

Thanks,
Grady

Been there several times. The NP is the only way to go. Weather is you key to good images. Wildlife can be sporadic in November. Plan on at least two days, more if you can. Hiking is good. Some very interesting geology.

FYI, this has been moved to the "Regions" sub section as the "Showcase" area is to show/display images.

I was there many moons ago and did not stay long enough, but the best area to see the maples is McKittrick Canyon, IMHO. I do not know what their water situation has been and the color may not be too great this year, but that area is really spectacular when the maples are in their full glory.

These trees are the exact same species as those at Lost Maples State Park, which is interesting due to the distance between locations. Accommodations in the park are camping out on parking lots. Whites City is just up the road at the entrance to Carlsbad Caverns NP and there used to be a nice campground and a couple of motels. Further up the road is Carlsbad, NM.

Get to McKittrick early and hike up the trail to the old house. There is, or was, a creek there and this is a nice walk. Weekends will be busy! During the middle of the week will be best.

Post some photos of the trees.
