Truck Versus Train - 04-05-2005, 06:40 PM

Train wins. We drove by this only a few minutes after it happened. The driver (female, unhurt) must have inadvertantly nudged or rolled too close to the passing train at the crossing and got clipped. This is how she landed. Now sign of the train anywhere. I bet the engineer never even knew about it.

You know I have always thought that the train would be the winner.
Sure glad on one got hurt, but you know you just wonder why some people can not figure that out.

Two things I've learned about Texas.

1. Interstate merges in Texas major cities were designed by Nascar enthusiasts.

2. Railroad Crossing warning signs in Texas (when they even exist) are seen more as "serving suggestions" than good advice.

This happens all over the US on a daily basis. It is not an isolated-Texas thing (from someone who deals with these types of accidents on a daily basis).

And you are right about the engineer probably not knowing that the truck ran into the train, 100+ ton trains don't feel much of anything when something runs into them.

The driver was fortunate to walk away from this unharmed.

Most people don't realize that even if the engineer sees you and applies the brakes, if the train is traveling at 50 mph it takes at least a half mile before the brakes engage and the train starts slowing down.
