Cool Dane!!!

No rust on those babies. At least not the part above the ground, with all of that paint!

First time I saw them they had their original paint.

Yes, I'm older than the dirt they are half buried in.

Why did I stop in Amarillo? Because that's as far as I could drive from Lafayette, LA in one day. Over the years, I think I've stayed in every town between Vernon and Dalhart that had a motel.

What does Amarillo offer? Little or no traffic, for one. We also have real, one story houses with 2,000+ sq. ft. and WIDE streets. Utilities are way less and we are 4 to 6 hours from the mountains. When Rudy's BBQ opens next year, it will be a lot easier to get to than off the Toll Road - Oh, we don't have any Toll Roads, either. About the only thing Frisco has to offer is my grandson. Oh, Frisco also has a few snobs.

Amarillo is one of the best kept secrets around. If only the wind didn't blow so much and I could get my GPS from getting lost (that's another story about driving down from Dumas to Amarillo on my way to Van Horn...Don't ask). Lots of photo ops within 2-4 hr drive of Amarillo.

Restaurants aren't too bad. Recently, I had a very good martini and steak at Lincoln's. Hope they are still there the next time I'm through there which should be the 2nd wk of Dec. What are some other good places to eat around Amarillo?

Here are a couple of pix taken within a 2-4 hr drive of Amarillo. This is my first post and am not sure I attached the files correctly. Time will tell as soon as I hit the enter button.

Corky, the old Phillips 66 at McLean and the "Leaning Tower of Groom" That old 66 station was on the original 2 lane Route 66 and parts of it are still there in McLean.

Cool

To all of you who haven't driven US 287 from Beaumont to Oklahoma: You must do it. And go through all of the towns that the new highway goes around. The best part of the drive is dawn-early am after you leave Vernon real early. Listenting to the farm report on the radio. Now that's Texas!

I was born and raised in this HUGE house SW of Claude about 10 miles and 1 mile N of the Palo Duro ( can you see it in the picture ) our house was maybe 600 sqft and my Great Grand Dad built it. To us it was a mansion. We also had about 6 sections of land surrounding our house and 4 sections in the canyon.

Sorry just all this discussion about Amarillo made me kinda Home Sick.

I took this pic in 1974 so it not the best.

We just got back from spending Thanksgiving week at the family farm about 15 miles NE of Crosbyton, Tx. There's nothing like being in the panhandle. We hate to leave every single visit. My wife's parents are cotton farmers so life is slow, but we see something interesting every time we go. This is from yesterday.
