Looking for photo ops while driving across TX - 05-07-2008, 11:09 PM

I'm a little late in asking this, but I'll be driving from Houston across TX to the Hobbs, NM area this Saturday (5/10) and returning next Saturday. The general route I'm taking on the way up is through Killeen, Abilene, Sweetwater, Snyder (GOTTA stop in Snyder...), and on over toward Hobbs.

Anybody know of any good photo opportunities along the way? My route isn't cut in stone, so if someone knows of someting either side of my general route, let me know. I'm perfectly willing to modify my route for a good picture!

Thanks,

West of Snyder - 05-08-2008, 08:12 AM

Hi Ken. I used to travel quite a bit in the desolate area of that part of West Texas (Snyder west). At one time I was doing a photo essay on "Black Gold" and "King Cotton". I've gotten some good pix on 180 regarding the above. In Snyder there are two restaurants that aren't too bad. The Shack has really good CFS. The only decent hole in the wall Mexican restaurant I've eaten in is Jaramillo's. Needless to say they are easy to find in Snyder. As far as photo ops west of there, between Andrews and Kermit on 115 there are some really neat sand dunes (closer to Kermit). You may even be able to get some good pix of reptiles (be careful). The best sand dunes are just east of Monahans on I-20 at the state park. On 115 between Andrews and Kermit I have actually driven and not seen another auto or truck. It's pretty desolate. I like Hobbs, it's a neat oil town.

North of Post on 84 (a mile or so) after you climb up the caprock there is a rest/picnic area on the left where you can get some good long range scenic shots.

Fort Phantom Hill just north of Abilene is photogenic at times. A rather desolate collection of rock chimneys with a few remaining/restored buildings.
