Looking for an Airplane Boneyard - 09-09-2008, 10:06 AM

Anyone know of any old airplane salvage yards in Texas? There was one in El paso I believe and for some reason I feel like there is one in Amarillo.

I need to do a shoot with for some folks and an airplane boneyard would be perfect!

I just can't find one. I found some military specific ones in California and Arizona, but I'd rather find some cool old commercial or even small planes to shoot around.

And most of those big ones are fenced of anyway.

There is a small one in San Antonio, but probably not to the scale that it sounds like you are looking for.

Check around at small municipal airports; my granddad managed one, and he would often buy up wrecked small planes at auction and store them to strip for parts as needed. You might find a mechanic who does the same, and would be willing to let you do a shoot for a small fee or trade for services.

Oh that brings back memories, I grew up by the old Highland Park Airport, hung out at the old Dallas Garland Airport (damn old LBJ, the freeway ((not a political comment)) as it killed two airports) went to CAF airshows at GSW and used to go camping at Hartlee, and made my first and only parachute jump there. Ah good times

Ardmore (not Ardmore Downtown Executive) is to the North East of Ardmore, OK. There's quite a few airliners sitting to the north and south of the control tower.

It has been years back, but I seem to recall seeing one in Ft. Davis. Across the street, and a little ways north of the Fort.

There used to be some old planes out near Devil's Bowl Speedway off Lawson Road in Mesquite. I'll go by and take some pics if they're still there.
