They are expecting up to 30 hot air balloons to attend this event on October 24, 25, and 26 at Palo Duro Canyon State Park and Tradewinds Airport in Amarillo. 30 balloons going up from the canyon can be spectacular.

I wish I lived closer because my kids would love to see this.

40-42 degrees at night in Amarillo (projected) - wonder what that translates to in the canyon? We're gonna bust out our new tarp/net-tent and do some hiking. The balloon events seem to be one in the evening, one in the morning. Not sure if we'll make the ones in town but will definitely make the Sunday morning liftoff.

David,

We ended up bailing out on this trip due to the wind forecast. Did the balloons make their launch on Sunday from the canyon floor?

They had the glow on Friday night and the Search for the Black Pearl Saturday morning, both at Tradewinds Airport in Amarillo, but the Saturday night ascension and the Sunday Morning Mass Ascension from the floor of Palo Duro Canyon were canceled due to excessive wind speeds. This is pretty common here, hence all of the wind generators that are going up around here!

ah, well I'm sorry YOU missed out, but I'm glad I didn't miss anything. We were not planning on going into town, but I also thought there were going to be only 8 balloons. I later read that 30 had shown up, and I would *really* be upset at missing out on 30 balloons in the air above Palo Duro!

Hot air balloons have a low tolerance for high winds and these events are real hit and miss in our part of the world because we do have higher constant wind speeds. The event got 50% of the planned events done, including one ascension, so that was pretty good. I don't know where you got the idea that 8 balloons were involved because the official release was for up to 30. And I am really not sure what you mean by ME not getting to enjoy it. I was just telling you what happened. If the event is not to your liking, don't attend.

Perhaps I should have phrased that differently, as you obviously misunderstood. While I am glad that my wife and I did not travel all the way up there only to miss out on the Sunday morning ascension, I am NOT glad that YOU did not get to enjoy it. That's all i was saying.

I think I got the 8 balloon figure from the Pirates of the Canyon web site, probably talking about last year, or maybe the first year.
