Historic Church: New Sweden Evangelical Lutheran - 11-04-2008, 08:39 PM

Located in Manor, Texas, the New Sweden Evangelical Lutheran Church was built in the 1920s and is an easily recognizable structure in the countryside East of Austin. The 104 foot steeple, with a copper exterior can be seen for miles on a clear day. The New Sweden Evangelical Lutheran congregation will celebrate their 133rd year of existence this February.

I shot these this past weekend, using natural light.

Interesting tidbit: A few scenes for an upcoming film, "The Tree of Life", starring Brad Pitt and Sean Penn, were filmed inside the Church a few months ago. Many locals were used as 'extras' in the movie for the Church scenes.

Thanks for sharing. I better get over there in a hurry. It won't be long before this church is surrounded by subdivisions and strip malls. That will ruin the feeling of isolation. The setting looks like it could be anywhere on the Great Plains.

Thanks Steve.

Thank you Wayne. So far, it's still very quiet and remote out there near the Church...but it's only a matter of time.

Thanks Autumn. You can stop an shoot the exterior at any time. However, the doors are usually locked. Fortunately, I have relatives in the area, so was let in for a few hours.
