Palo Duro Canyon - 12-22-2008, 10:16 AM

Went there with the family last weekend. I admit we didn't walk all the way to the Light House. It was lunch time and the kids were dragging. Once we got to the first viewing area and had a good look through the binoculars, we vowed to go all the way, with more provisions, on our next trip.

Let's see if these silly links will work...

Nice. I've really gotta make the trek out there soon.

Thanks, Jim. It's a really beautiful place. We'd been to Caprock Canyons which is also really cool (and 90 minutes closer to home). But at Palo Duro, you're actually down inside the canyon. There are surely plenty of difficult trails for the athletically inclied, but there are many miles of well worn, family friendly trails. We do a lot of tent camping, but rented a travel trailer for this trip as an early Christmas gift for the family. Also the bathroom and shower facilities were very nice and clean, which is more than I can say for Enchanted Rock which we visited a couple months ago.

Andrew, We primarily tent camp or get a screen shelter. Do you recommend not tent camping at Palo Duro? Or, did you rent a travel trailer for a change of pace?

Not the park itself, but the weather that got us into the RV for this trip. There are numerous tent camping sites at Palo Duro, as well as many RV sites with water and electric. When the weather is nice, I love tent camping and cooking over an open fire. (We did prepare one meal outdoors with dutch ovens, but mostly cooked inside on this trip.) We've actually tented in some fairly cool weather with our propane heater, but that's really only comfortable down to about 40 degrees. So we do a little of both depending on our mood and the conditions.

Gordon,
I can't wait to go there in Spring. We were amazed at the variety of wildflowers we saw at Caprock Canyons in May 2007. Growing right out of the rocks, it seemed. There was a lot of vegetation in Palo Duro, so I bet it's awesome when they've had plenty of rain.

It depends on how tough you are. It was 15 this morning! Of course, you would have the entire tent area to yourself and the rattlesnakes would not be a problem, unless they decided to crawl into a nice, warm sleeping bag
