Join us at the Arlington Hilton for an exciting and informative hands-on seminar about studio and outdoor lighting. Students will learn how to set up a basic home studio light kit, learn a mixture of studio and strobe lighting techniques, as well as explore how to creatively add lights outside on location. The basic lighting segment of the class will be taught by Xavier De La Paz. The instructor for the advanced outdoor segment is professional photographer Ross Benton. Ross has a unique style and ability to beautifully capture his subjects with a winning combination of traditional posing and dramatic lighting with a photojournalistic flair. Each student should bring their camera and a favorite lens as you will have the opportunity to participate in this educational program. The only prerequisite for the class is a working knowledge of your camera and an understanding of how to set shutter speed and aperture.
Part I - Introduction to Lighting
Students will learn how to set up a basic home studio, including the set-up of a studio light kit. You will also see demonstrations of the latest techniques and equipment necessary to utilize light to make your images look more professional.
Topics include:
• Introduction to studio flash and strobe equipment
• How to use a light meter
• Proper exposure and white balance
• Basic studio light set-up with one or more lights
• Introduction to light modifiers
Part II - Advanced Lighting on Location
Learn to properly add lights outside! Students will be introduced to outdoor photography in areas of shade and partial sunlight using battery operated strobes and fill accessories. Also, the instructors will cover the use of a scrim and how to meter outside with a strobe.
Topics include:
• Outdoor shooting in mixed light conditions
• Building a main light and using a strobe as an accent light in open shade
• Several ways to use scrim jims
Bonus
Canon Tech Rep will be on hand with loaner equipment for the day. Bogen Rep Chuck Caves will be available to demo equipment. Props will be provided by American Photographic Resources.
