The Economics of Survival - 12-20-2008, 12:35 PM

Since I haven't made a career in photography over the last 20 years, this article was a real eye-opener for me. It certainly isn't a rosy picture, so to speak, but it is an honest assessment by a full-time, professional photographer.

The problem with Photo Forums are ...
all the photographers there think they are going to be pro prem-a-donnas !

Its the same with Models and Model Forums !

I wonder what God's order of creation was when creating either ...

Technology is a double edged sword, what someone can do with Photoshop today a program will do tomorrow. I think a lot of the skill in photography left when digital became a viable alternative. Many mistakes can be "Fixed" which I almost feel is cheating. The majority of people would be lost in a darkroom, I for one haven't developed film in almost 8 years. For me its a hobby and if I don't have to deal with stinky chemicals anymore its fine by me.

Same with me. I shudder to think of how much damage I did to my young body 30 years ago in high school by putting my fingers directly into D-76, Dektol, stop bath, fixer etc... over and over again, as well as eating in that darkroom with hands that had been touching those chemicals, as well as breathing them in in an unventilated darkroom.

I think the phrase is "prima donna" but not all photographers could possibly think they are going to be prima donna. The male gender would be primo uomo.

3 sentences into this one and all I can say is:

yes go ahead retire now....

leave more jobs for me.

otherwise, don't listen to this crap, it's made to weed out the weak and insecure.
Would any of use be doing this if we didn't feel even a slightest positive feedback to continue throwing money down the drain?

I amaze at how great of pictures you can get from even the cheapest digital cameras, and with being about to shoot un limited number of shoots.. surely you get one good one. I know thats more to it that that, been shooting longtime. When I started with my Nikormat El .. it was expensive to shoot more that 2 rolls of film a week, now I can go out shoot 300 shoots in one night. People don't really see the value of a photographer as much as they use to...
