New month, new assignment... let's give thanks... I've got lots of ideas I think I'm going to try myself for this one.

Also, don't forget its not too late to submit your Halloween photos to last month's assignment: Scary.

I took the first photo at a game last year where Cpl. Jacob Schick, a former team captain and all state lineman, was being honored. His story is below. I was moved to tears by the ceremony, as were several big burly football coaches that hugged him until I thought he would break.

As he was on the sidelines waiting to walk out, he was sitting in a wheelchair, being just barely ambulatory at this point. I knew a little bit of his story, and since he was within 3 feet of me, I felt inspired to say something to him. I was pretty choked up, and it took me three tries to get the words out. "Thank you, Jake" was all I could manage.

His response? "Oh, yes sir. Your welcome."

With a smile.

The second shot was taken a few weeks ago at another Coppell game (sorry for the lousy quality). It was the first time I'd seen the true extent of his injuries, and the memory of the previous year's ceremony came flooding back to me.

Thanks again, Jake.

CORPORAL JACOB SCHICK

Graduated from Coppell High School in Coppell Tx, in 2001, where he was an all state lineman.

HE IMMEDIATELY JOINED THE MARINES IN MAY OF 2001. AFTER MACHINE GUNNER TRAINING, HE WAS STATIONED IN BOSSIER CITY, LA. THEN DEPLOYED TO IRAQ IN OCT 2003.

ON SEPT 20, 2004, CPL SCHICK WAS DRIVING THE LEAD VEHICLE ON A SECURITY RUN WHEN HIS HUMVEE STRUCK AN ANTI TANK MINE. THE FORCE OF THE EXPLOSION DESTROYED HIS VEHICLE. CPL SHICK SUFFERED NUMEROUS INJURIES INCLUDING AN OPEN FRACTURE OF HIS LEFT TIBIA, BROKEN LEFT ARM WITH EVULSIONS ON THE SAME ARM AND HAND, AND MOST SERIOUSLY, HIS RIGHT FOOT WAS SHATTERED... CPL SHICK WAS EVACUATED 42 MIN AFTER THE EXPLOSION TO BADDAD VIA A BLACKHAWK HELO WHERE HE UNDERWENT EMERGENCY SURGERY TO AMPUTATE HIS FOOT AND PART OF HIS LEFT HAND. HE WAS MOVED TO LANDSTUL GERMANY AND FINALLY TO BROOK ARMY MEDICAL CENTER IN SAN ANTONIO WHERE HE WOULD SPEND THE NEXT 18 MONTHS. SINCE HIS INJURY ON SEPT. 20, 2004 HE HAS UNDERGONE HOURS OF PAINFUL REHABILITATION AND 45 ADDITIONAL OPERATIONS.

CPL SCHICK WAS AWARDED SEVERAL MEDALS FOR HIS SERVICE AND BRAVERY BUT ONE -THE COVETED PURPLE HEART- HE REFUSED TO ACCEPT UNTIL THE REST OF HIS UNIT CAME HOME. THAT DAY CAME ON MAY 08, 2005 WHEN LT CORNEL MILLER PRESENTED CORPORAL SHICK HIS PURPLE HEART.

HE WAS MEDICALLY RETIRED IN MARCH 2006 AND NOW RESIDES IN BATON ROUGE, LA .

CORPORAL JACOB SCHICK IS THE FIRST MARINE SELECTED TO SERVE ON THE MILITARY BOARD OF DIRECTORS FOR AMERICAN WAR HEROES.

Certainly we owe them a lot.

Thanks to those families, who suffer without ever get to see the loved ones, for their sacrifises.
