April Assignment: Triptych - 04-01-2009, 05:50 PM

New April Assignment..

Do a triptych...

From a DPChallenge years ago..
Quote:
A triptych is any picture in three parts, which may be in one or three frames. The three parts may be from a single picture split in three sections, for three related pictures that are designed to be shown together, or three seemingly unrelated pictures that have been put together at the decision of the artist.
So lets get creative.

I like what Ray entered.
In reading the desription, I had in my mind one of those shots that are in three pieces. You know, three prints that make up one picture, that some will hang on the wall behind the couch, or something like that...

It can be that too. But I also like Ray's concept here.

Any of those things are valid for a triptych.. but the idea is as much their presentation as it is about the images and how they go together. The order of the images.. the frames around them.. play with it.. this one has lots of possibilities.

I recently had a class assignment to do a diptych, and a triptych. My instructor told us that a diptych, or in this case a triptych, is three images, when viewed together, makes a statement that is greater than than sum of the three single photos. For instance, on the ferris wheel triptych, each individual photo is okay. But when viewed together, does it make a more powerful image?
It doesn't have to be "beginning, middle, end", although that is what I chose for my triptych. I took a front shot of a locomotive (nice colorful Santa Fe engine), and then a side view of an old passenger car, and finally, a rear shot of an old red caboose. Each shot was alright, but together it made a more powerful image.
I don't have it with me to post, unfortunately!
Tom

Exactly.. the presentation of the images together is what makes it work in this case.

I agree also, which is why I added the "It's easy to get carried away too.." cautionary statement. It is fun to play with though.
