Assignment #25: Candy - 10-14-2005, 07:05 AM

Candy is Dandy, but Liquor is Quicker.

All right, continuing with our October themes here, this time up is "Candy" .. anything you want is valid, even if its a model named Candy. Its ok to use images from your archive for this one.

ANNOUNCEMENT: Two Weeks from today, October 28, the assignment will be Halloween 2005. For that one, I want to see something new, shot for THIS Halloween, so start thinking now about what you want to do to make the one shot that best shows Halloween 2005. With the talent we have around here, we should get some really cool shots.

Candy Corn - 10-15-2005, 09:12 PM

Ok, here goes. This is my first time doing one of the assignments on this forum.

I took these this afternoon outside. (It was too beautiful to be inside)
Please let me know which you like better!

Both are simply candy corn on top of a small mirror.

#1: 1/90 sec f8 100mm Macro on 20D (handheld)

#2: 1/90 sec f13 100 mm Macro on 20D (tripod)

I like the first one, mainly I suppose because I tend to be disorganized myself, and like chaos and disorder. I can't quite explain, but something about the second image just doesn't work for me ... I'll keep looking at it, if I can figure out what I'm thinkin', I'll drop you a note. The mirror is a neat effect.

Great ideas, and nice closeup shots !

2nd one - 10-17-2005, 07:35 AM

Randy,
After thinking about this, I think I know what the problem is with the second one. With the first one, we expect it to be random so the randomness is fine. With the second one, it appears that it should be orderly so the imperfections jump out. (the differences between candy corns, the not perfect spacing, etc.)
Perhaps the first one seems "right", but the second one seems "staged, but not perfect".

Thanks for your comments,

Alan

I've looked and relooked at this several times, I'm still not sure, but I think what bothers me is the white tips in the center that conflict in my head with the light blue and the contrast of red/blue background .. I feel I don't know where my eye is drawn to first, the 1)white, the 2)red/blue contrast ... hmmm, maybe just me and I certainly could be wrong .. it may be a great photograph for reasons I don't understand, .... but just my honest thoughts ...

Thank you!!! The Girlz and I have been having a lot of fun lately in the studio, getting images together for our site. Had to share some of the "sweets"

One thing that I noticed about your 2 images with the lollipops - you need to show more of the girl's curves. Whether you show more cleavage or turn her a little more to the side, show more curve. The 2nd image, where she is kneeling down is better but if you have her arch her back a little more to give her more of a "rounded" butt so she isn't so straight, you might like the result better.

One trick to try if you are not shooting full body - one of our Girlz taught me this one not too long ago, because she has no butt otherwise - have your model stand with her feet about shoulder's width apart. Then, have her turn her toes in towards each other so they touch in the middle (pidgeon-toe style) and, with her knees touching in the middle, bend her knees a little. When she does that, it forces her butt out and gives her curves.

Here's another image for fun:

Great shots, Kathi.. but I'm not seeing bubblegum or skittles in those shots... perhaps I'm not looking at the right part of the image?

(Seriously, great work.)
