Looking for outdoor venues for modeling/portraits - 09-09-2010, 01:50 PM

I'm just starting to work with a few models and I enjoy shooting outdoors, but I'm new to Austin and not really sure where to start. I'm looking for locatons that offer some shady spots, some architectural elements, maybe a little off the beaten path, but I'm open to working around/in public spaces as well. The two models I have are classic beauties with a funky/sexy edge I want to bring out. No idea where to take them. Help? Any ideas are greatly appreciated! I'll come back and post pictures :)

Also, I'm open to Central, South, North. I am looking for public spaces that do not charge a fee.

The first place that comes to mind is the Capitol. It's very photographer-friendly and free. The grounds have lots of grass and trees with large shade canopies which often have photographers taking photos. Inside, you'll have to get your bags checked by security but besides that there are no hassles. It might be good to have flash.

If you park near there, do check out the blocks around the Capitol. There are several interesting building facades, doorways, awnings and walls with interesting color.

If you head north of town - to CedarPark - you can do the Brushy Creek trail. It has a bunch of spots along it including very nature oriented spots and railroad bridges and rusted out buildings. Lots of things.

Downtown you have some grafiti type places along the RR line - such as right by the YMCA/Amtrack spot at 5th & Lamar.

FYI--Brushy Creek was toast last I checked. The flooding from Hermine took out a good part of the park where I have shot before. not sure how the clean up is going.

I like the Barton Creek area for a nature setting. All around the Long Center/Palmer/Lady Bird Lake area there are lots of opportunities.

This is true - but it makes for something different if you want the water...

Check out Mayfield Park in Austin: Mayfield Park and Preserve Community Project As long as there's not a function going on, it's free for photographers to shoot there. Theres several great ponds, nice garden setting and a few free roaming Peacocks that always work great in the background.
