LOCALE: Mayfield Park/Garden - 04-26-2006, 12:18 PM

Properly called Mayfield Park and Preserve, it is located on the far west end of 35th Street on the way up to Mount Bonnell, next to Laguna Gloria. It consists of a garden with ponds, flowers and peacocks, and a nature preserve with trails.

Dogs are unfortunately not allowed in the garden or on the trails, unlike Laguna Gloria next door, which does allow dogs on their grounds.

From what I understand, this (spring) is the best time of year for Mayfield park as that's when the peacocks have their best plummage. Which reminds me, I need to get there some time soon!

The pictures above were taken last weekend (April 22) so the peacocks are in full plummage now, though there is a peacock running around without tail feathers. The peahens are much less colorful, mostly brown with some color on their heads.

i really wish they would add more to their landscaping. I feel it's missing more oomph. Love the peacocks tho!

I went there and couldnt find the frog rock. I saw a peacock in a tree, maybe he doesn't know how to get down.

Great pics!

The frog rock is close to the entrance from the parking lot, facing towards that entrance. It is next to a pond or some form of basin and close to the main building. Approx. where the red dot is.

I had a family that doesn't want to pay the $50 to shoot at Zilker Botanical garden, so I suggested mayfield instead, they would like the ponds with koi fish in them. Just trying to make sure that mayfield has that. How much does it cost to shoot there, and do I need to make a reservation???

Thanks

Just visited this FREE park this past weekend while in Austin. What a great venue for portraits and photography in general.

There continues to be over a dozen colorful peacocks everywhere (even in the parking lot) - and if you're in the vicinity of downtown Austin, then you'll want to head over to Mayfield Park with your camera.
