Tours: Other activities include guided tours to Gorman Falls on the weekends. The only way to view the falls, from the park, is on the guided tour. Reservations are NOT required for the Gorman Falls tours. The park also offers guided walking wild cave tours and self guided crawling cave explorations. Due to various hazards in the caves such as low oxygen levels and poisonous gases and the fact that the caves are a non-renewable natural resource, ALL CAVES in the park are closed except through tour or special permit. Reservations are highly recommended for the cave tours due to the limited number of people which can be taken on any given tour. Contact the park (325/628-3240) to make reservations and check questionable weather conditions | | | | | Sponsored Links | Premium Members do not see Google advertisements. So what's the deail with only allowing guided tours to the falls, anybody know? 10:00am and 2:00pm aren't exactly prime photography hours.

Colorado Bend is worth checking out even if you can't make the falls tour (I've never gotten there that early).
Of course, right now it's rather dry. I was there a couple months ago and you could walk across the Colorado without getting your feet muddy. The ranger said the river was 12 feet below normal. This picture was from a particularly wide spot. | | | |

Gorman Falls is a very fragile eco system. some years ago, before they started restricting access to the falls, people pretty much trashed the falls. people trampled the vegetation, littered around the falls, etc ... the kind of stuff that people do. consequently, most of the vegetation around the falls died off, which caused a cascade of changes to the falls - almost to the point of it disappearing. it has taken more than a decade (maybe even two - i guess i'm starting to age myself...) to re-establish the fawna and eco system around the falls, and it's still not fully restored yet, so they are pretty protective of it and restrict the amount of traffic that it gets.
besides the falls, there are some pretty neat places at Colorado Bend State Park. the river itself is pretty impressive. the high steep sheer walls of the canyon to the river bed are pretty dramatic. as usual, there are lots of deer that roam around the park along with other wildlife.

This weekend would work well for me, as I have a 3 day weekend coming up and its not that far from Austin. I didn't know about this place. Thanks for bumping it up.
