Shooting fireworks in Austin? - 07-04-2009, 01:12 PM

Hello. I am in Austin today, July 4th, and want to find a good place to shoot the fireworks to be held near town lake.

Does anybody have any suggestions for a place that will not be crowded but have a good vantage point? Preferably of the entire downtown area with the fireworks rising up over the lake.

Some time I ago, I was arriving into Austin on 290 and I seemed to have come upon a spot that looked out over the entire city. Where might that spot have been??? And would it be good to shoot the fireworks, or would it be too far away?

I was driving around today and while heading east on 183, I seemed to have found a spot that looked back west over downtown along the river bed. It is far enough off that nobody would be around, but it might be a good spot for fireworks rising up over the downtown city skyline. ????

Thanks for any suggestions!

sorry, just seeing this today for the first time. I guess everyone else missed your question too. Probably out doing holiday stuff.

Oh well. I was really hoping to land THE spot. The shooter for the Austin newspaper nailed it. We did end up at a fair spot on I South Pleasant Valley Rd near the intersection of S Lakeshore Rd. Downtown was a ways off, but it was cool to have an entire body of water in front of us:

I shot from the top of a 50 foot hill in a park across the lake from downtown. It was not an ideal location. I was too close to the fireworks and forced to use an 18mm to get the shot. Would have been nice to have a perspective control lens.

You can always PC in Photochop pretty easily. I generally create a dup layer, then edit> transform>perspective or skew....
