A little out of the area you are asking but maybe worth the trip.

Try the Round Rock Memorial Park. Not sure how it is this time of year, but there's usually a heron or egret present. There will usually be tons of ducks at Hornsby in the winter. TWPD has a very good list:

A bit farther north... Lake Georgetown. A bit farther south - the Barton Creek Greenbelt. A bit farther west - Anything off of 360.

At Parmer and Brushy Creek road is Brushy Creek Lake Park. I was getting some decent bird shots there yesterday. Gulls, ducks, loons (or were they coots?) and a few herons.

Care to post any of those shots from Brushy Creek Lake Park?
I have always been curious if one could really get any decent shots there....

It's not too hard to get duck/coot shots there, but the herons and egrets tend to be kind of skittish. If you walk the trail (either cross the dam and take the trail east, or park at the trailhead park at the corner of Brushy Creek and Great Oaks and take the trail west) they're more plentiful.

I saw two GBHs and two Great Egrets along the creek yesterday as I was running. They didn't take any notice of my running by, and were close enough to get decent shots even from the trail.

Here as a few shots. The heron just stood there about 20-30 feet away and maintained that gap as I walked towards him. I needed him to move away from some trash then had some user/focus issues...so I only got a couple of shot of him that were usable.

Yeah, I'm getting used to a real camera again and having to refresh old memories on that. Guess I need to break out the old bird book and get a refresher there too.

This was a few years back, but is my favorite from Brushy Creek Lake Park itself.
