Sherwood Forest Faire - 03-22-2010, 05:47 PM

This is east of Austin. I don't know that I've seen it mentioned here. Is it worth attending, with only two weekends left?

Sherwood Forest Faire - Opening Spring 2010 Austin TX area!

I've been to Plantersville and Waxahachie each a few times and enjoyed it. This looks smaller, but similar.

This is Sherwood's first year, they're small but still growing and planning to get bigger. They've already announced more dates for next year than this one. I believe that opening weekend they had something like 60 different zip codes visit according to their surveys.

It's not as big as TRF or Scarborough, but again being it's first year it appears to be doing well. There appears to still be a lot of things "under construction" and a lot of room for growth.

I'll be there closing weekend, but I couldn't make it over any other time this season.

We're considering heading there. I'll post some pics if we go.

Thanks.

I went last weekend to check it out as I may see about opening a shop there next year. It's a nice faire especially for a 1st year faire. I would recommend it - just take into account that it is a work in progress.

I went and checked it out with the family yesterday
it is a little smaller than the one I am used to going to, but it is a lot closer and we still had a good time, plus I am sure it will grow, this is the first year

they have all the standard stuff, like tree nymphs and belly dancers

centaurs and knights

and jousting exercises

The centaur is the same one from Plantersville. The knights look familiar also.

I figure these people just move around to wherever the current fair is.. like carny's
especially now that there are 3 in the area, and I think they all run durring different months - a lot of the charecters seem to be the same

We went last Saturday and had a lot of fun. Many of the attractions were the same, but certainly lower in number. I'd say too that I saw more young families there. I have shots of some of the same events above, plus more of the Birds of Prey. But here is one I just quickly went into PS to tweak that I liked.

many of the vendors, and performers (stage acts) do this as their full time job. They travel around the country and perform at faires and other carnivals etc. The family who does the Birds of Prey show at TRF is actually only home about 3 weeks a year or something like that because of traveling for shows and such. Not many character cast members from TRF are over at Sherwood, but there are a lot of patrons that have been making the trip.

FWIW they are hiding 1,000 eggs for Sunday. Here is what the email said:

When morning breaks on Sunday, April 4th, there will be over 1,000 colored eggs, filled with magical Easter treats, hidden all over the shire. Our Easter egg hunt begins the moment we open the gates at 10:00 o’clock, so come early.
At 11:00 o’clock make your way to Maid Marian’s Chapel where Father Jay Young will lead an Easter prayer (partially in Latin), complete with pageantry and singing by several performers.
There will also be a legion of Roman Soldiers, one of who will tell a story of his encounter with Jesus on the day of His crucifixion. Following this merry Easter mass Father Jay will conduct an optional Easter communion at the portrait stage adjacent to the Chapel.
The Easter Eggs will be EVERYWHERE, and games and entertainment for wee lads and lasses will continue throughout the day in “Once Upon a Time...,” Sherwood Forest’s magical area especially
for kids.
Come ring in the spring with us this Easter Sunday at Sherwood Forest Faire!

I'm afraid the forecast for Saturday (rain) is such that Sunday may be muddy.
