Looking for old wooden buildings - 04-06-2010, 09:47 AM

I am looking for old wooden structures to photograph around Austin. I am willing to drive an hour or two away if necessary. The kicker is, I want to do this as legally as possible so I need locations that are either public or I can get permission from the landowners to shoot on their property. Any help or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Have you checked out Henkel Square in Round top? Henkel Square
Nearby Burton on US290 east:
Burton, Texas
From Burton take TX390 (designated a state scenic highway) to Gay Hill (go a couple of blocks off the hwy for some old abandoned buildings) then on to Independence:

We were in this area last weekend and the blubonnets were really awesome.

There is an old barn just off of Toll Road 45 and where 620 veers away eastbound. It is a structure I have wanted to photograph and it is right next to the road.

There are some old cabins made into a little park at the entrance to Spanish Oaks subdivision on Hwy. 71 just after the bridge over Barton Creek and before the HEB at Bee Caves Rd.
Also, there is a place called Ghost Town east of Manor off Hwy. 290. It's a private park that appreciates photographers. The have moved in or constructed a whole little town with a bar, jail, stables, and stuff. Look for the signs on 290 for "Ghost Town Burgers" to turn at Kimbro Rd. and turn left across the railroad tracks when the road curves right.

Just pull out a map, find some farm to market roads, county roads etc. Plan your route and head out. In Texas you are bound to find some old barns and buildings accessible by road to photograph. If you want to shoot inside that can be harder and yes before ever going on to someones property get their permission. Most land owners are also gun owners. :)

That's just the problem Jason... I want to get up close. I'd rather not get shot or arrested.

Consider Pontotoc, Texas... about 1.5 hours from Austin. They have some old buildings (late 1800s)... pretty cool stuff.

head down to Granger Hwy 95 north east of Georgetown, they have a downtown street that was retrofitted with 1800s sotre fronts for the remake of true grit. Comes complete with dirt road and gallows. Not sure how long it is going to be up

You could also go to Old Settlers Park in Round Rock. They have a small village setup that they use for Frontir Days. Just make sure to check in in the office when you get there though. They are usually pretty easy going about people shooting there (except around the white house since someone actually lives there) as long as they know your there. Nice barn back there too.
