Austin: Source for white or grey seamless other than precision? - 06-09-2011, 09:56 AM

Anyone know of a local source for white or grey seamless other than precision? I'm just a little tired of the attitude I get there... wouldn't mind checking out another shop. Any ideas?

I've never gotten any bad attitude from Precision - so I'm somewhat surprised to hear you mention that as a problem. My other 2 local photo companies are Holland and Pounds, but those are both more printing oriented than taking oriented. I think the WWW is your best bet.

I also wasn't happy with the help I got at Precision earlier this week. I was attempting to ask a very serious question about flash voltages and whether or not I could brick my camera using an old Vivitar flash on my DSLR, and the guy cut me off before I could even finish and vehemently opposed the possibility that using it could damage my camera. He basically said told me that flash voltage issues are a myth, and that he's "broken more flashes than cameras" due to voltage issues.

Nice, buddy, but I don't want to break the flash either! Sheesh...plus, your breakage record on equipment isn't something I'd advertise to customers, personally.

On top of that, Precision seems way overpriced.

This is the thing that I hear most often about them. Yes, they certainly are priced higher than a B&H or Adorama. But they really aren't in the same market. They are a small/specialty shop and as such I expect them to be more expensive - but they aren't overpriced. Just at MSRP most of the time instead of discounting based on volume.

The service you mentioned would be much more of an issue for me than the price. It is the service that allows them to charge the price (just like we photographers charge more than the bulk place in the mall because of our service).
