there are some great parks around the city. mckiney is a great one. take a little trip to Grene and do some shooting down along the river. you can go under mopac(loop one) right there at the barton springs mall and you just might find twin falls. it's not a water fall like you would think but it's still fun.

wild life or wild flower basin is fun. lot's of little towns around too. Taylor, Cele, all with in minutes of Austin.

you can hit blue hole, deep eddy town lake, lake travis. just to name a few. take a little ride up to burnet and you can run into all kinds of things you can even make it up to lake bucanon.

Old farms and farmhouses. One of the more bizarre calls I have gotten was for someone stealing a barn. Got there, and yep, someone had stolen the whole barn. Later I found out that old barn wood was very valuable, as was the old tin from the roof. Wierd. Plus when Texas joined the Union, Texas kept its land, and the Federal Government did not get any, if they wanted land, they had to buy it unlike in other states where the Feds just appropriated all unclaimed land for themselves.

Right outside your front door: the Texas Hill Country. Everything you described and a lot more. Covers about a 150 mile swath west of Austin.

Enchanted Rock is very scenic, but you will want to go during the week since it is heavily visited during the weekends. They even have primitive camp sites available away from the developed areas. Lots of photo ops!

Great sites can be found in Burnet, Llano, Gillespie, and Mason counties. Pray for rain and, perhaps, we can have a good wildflower year. If so, don't miss it.

I do believe that we had rain at the right time of the year to have a good season. Go to Wildflower Haven (and its associated forum) for wildflower updates in the spring and then you can see one of the best reasons to live in Texas (lots of wildflowers).

The Guadalupe River State Park between Austin and San Antonio is very scenic, as is Lost Maples State Park northwest of San Antonio.

A little (well, a lot) farher away is Big Bend National Park, one of the most scenic areas in the US.
