Anybody know of good early morning times/locales? - 06-01-2005, 01:30 PM

I'm looking for some shots of farmland and mist, foggy scenes and something to that nature. In austin, what do you think is the best time to shoot in the early morning? Also, some good highways and backroads to visit during that time?

Thanks, Hook 'Em!

re: fog, mist, and the like... - 06-01-2005, 04:28 PM

you could check out 1826 (1846?) towards driftwood. you go south on mopac until it tees into 1826 and then take a left. go about 7 mile (past the salt lick) and take a left on 150. Take a right next to the old gas station (and across from a cute Methodist church--where i was married a couple years back) and go about 2 miles. You'll see some big fields (La Ventana). Sometimes they have hay bales out there. It might be good really, really early around day break. The weather isn't really conducive for mist or fog right now unless you get lucky. You may need to wait for a cool morning after a rain.

good luck.

that sounds pretty good! i dunno about your comment on the mist/fog though, because i was driving late at night yesterday and saw beautiful sunsets with marshy land and fog cover. maybe that's because it's night time, but i'm going to cross my fingers and hope for the best! (and also hope not to get lost)

thanks, any more suggestions from fellow austinites?

Welcome to the forum! Although I now reside in Sugar Land near Houston, I lived up in Austin for 10 years up until May, 1999... I'm sure you will find fields - the fog/mist...may take a while with the current weather..

But - just for grins... think about where you live - the beginnings of the Hill Country.. head out Hwy 71 from the "Y" in Oak Hill...there are great views of the hills from some of the formal pulloffs and some not so formal.. the fog settling in the valleys really make for dramatic effects :)

there are rolling hills and farm lands on highway 71 - approximately 2, 3 miles east of the airport . the scene looks very sureal at sunset. Not sure if those bales of hay are still around. I'm thinking about doing a photshoot there one day.

When I go cycling there are some good back roads that take me through leander, liberty hill and up through Burnet. Very nice farm land, would make for some good shots.

If you take 183N like you're heading to Cedar Park take a left at 1431, right on Bagdad Rd. You can now follow Bagdad all the way out (will eventually become County Road 279) to Leander, Liberty Hill, Bertram, and Burnet. Great area for what you're looking to do. Let me know if you need more info.

If you find anything please let me know. I have been looking for some of the same locations. I went driving out west, not sure where I was, and the hill country area definitely offers some nice settings.

If you head to Dripping Springs there's a road in town, Creek Road I believe. This road is in a low lying area with a creek and fields running along the entire way. You even cross the creek at close to water level. This area should be low enough and cool enough to produce good fog in the early morning, as well as the beautiful fields. Enjoy!!!

I like your photos...

BTW, if you ever want a novice (read me) to tag along for a photo shoot sometime I'm up for it. Getting as much practice will be good with this camera, especially if you know what you're doing.

How you doin'?

Great David, I will keep you in mind when I plan future photo "shoots"! Although, I consider myself a novice as well, so I can't guarantee much guidance! I've never had formal photography training myself, but the best way to learn is of course, to buy a camera and try it out. i agree--practice is key!

with the 20D, you're always learning something new.

There are a lot of places in Austin for that effect ...
It really depends on foreground background subject matter and of
course that perfect day and time.
Driftwood and Wimberly work well as well as N 35 to Georetown and Solado.
Solado is an old stage coach stop and you can spend the day there.
71 W to Fberg is also great and you can spend day in the town.
For other misty mornings {other than farm houses} ...
Two I have not yet done is Bullcreek (just a few minutes from my place),
and Lost Basin.
Some I have done is Hamilton Pool, Pecos River, Town Lake {many locations from city to nature}.
Let me know if you want to get together for a field trip sometime.

Eric
