Balloons over Lake Travis - Saturday 7/16 CANCELLED - 07-15-2005, 05:41 PM

There is a 30% chance of rain/thunderstorms at 7:00am tomorrow, so this might not happen, but there should be some great photo ops if it isn't rained out. So...is it worth getting up at 4:30 for? Well...I might just see you there, but am certainly going to call the hotline to be sure.

Right now they are saying launch will be between 6:30 and 6:45 with a go/no go decision at 8:00 tonight, and again at 5:00am tomorrow, with updates on the hotline. They will launch from the Mansfield Dam park with 15-20 balloons participating.

------------

From CTBA: Watch Hot Air Balloons as they inflate and fly over Lake Travis at the Central Texas Ballooning Association's annual Lake Travis flight. Bring your cameras and come see these colorful gentle giants come to life.

Balloon Pilots and Crew will meet in the parking lot just above the Mansfield Dam Park, located on Hwy 620, just west of the dam. Balloon will begin inflation about 30 minutes before sunrise, lifting off at sunrise (weather permitting).

For more information contact the Central Texas Ballooning Association at 512-479-9421 or visit our web site at http://www.main.org/ctba

I talked to the boss about it and she wants to go out in the morning...

Getting up early is gonna be hard... but I need the practice as my brother and I are going to the Colorado Springs Balloon Festival in early September to shoot for a couple of days. This should also help me decide what lenses to use - and whether I should get another one.

Well, I guess I'll have to go now :) I'm hoping to get out there and be set up by 6:20, and get a few pre-dawn shots of the balloon glow during inflation.

I just called the hotline and it appears they are still planning on the event, but have moved final weather assessment to 6:00.

If you see a half-asleep guy in his early 30s with a 20D, Tamron shoulder bag, and ugly grey tripod come say hi.

The balloon launch has been cancelled due to thunderstorms and high winds in the area.

Good...hopefully it's rescheduled on a day I could make it. I just saw this today and was like damn...missed out.

Do you know when, or if, they are going to reschedule?

How you doin'?

Well, I didn't drag my lazy posterior out of bed this morning - so maybe I'll get a chance to try again on a more pleasant day.

We were there when #30 pulled up to announce it had been cancelled.

Saw some wildlife but could not get good shots. Lightning was high and cloud to cloud so nothing to really shoot. Heavy clouds obscured the sunrise.

This would have been #3 for me. There is of course next year.

Yeah, we got there about 6:40 and they had already called it off. Supposedly this is their annual event, so it was a onetime deal (until next year of course). I did hear that the next organized event was going to be in Houston but Im not sure when. I did manage to get a few sunrise shots though so the morning wasnt a total loss.

Could be worse! - 07-17-2005, 06:27 AM

Back in the early 80's a couple of buddies and myself drove our motorcycles to Albuquerque, NM for the big balloon fest up there. Got there Saturday afternoon and it was snowing in spots. They left to go back to Arlington, I stayed around. Sunday morning, got up and the accension that morning was cancelled.

So at least you didn't drive hundreds of miles for nothing!

True Raymond! :D
That sounds like it was a real bummer.

Thanks Jason for the heads-up on the event.
I got up at 5:45 to do it.
Got the truck loaded with my usual too much gear and
was ready to leave but decided to check here at the last minute.
Thanks to Jason's post of it being cancelled I didn't go.
Thanks Jason! :D
Went to Hornsby instead and got rained on there.
Found some baby barn swallows but the rain drove me home in a couple of hours.
