Anyone go to SXSW this year? I've been to the interactive (all things internet) portion a couple times. I know I've missed 98% of the interactive already but I've got to go to Austin tomorrow and will be bored stiff the next 2 evenings there. I may go looking for stuff to see/shoot but just didn't know if there was anything to do without having that little (expensive) sxsw tag around my neck

I'm not heading up this year but have been in the past.

There will be plenty to do and see with the SXSW pass. Lots of the clubs will have similiar all day music that isn't 'official' SXSW. You will still get to see lots of great artists and hear some great music just by walking around.

The free shows that I know about are at Opal Devines 6th St. Wednesday, and Opal Devines Penn Field all week long. The Penn Field location shows are sponsored by Third Coast music, so they'll be good bands. There are free shows in the convention center everyday, and also outdoors at Auditorium Shores. I know Friday night there ends with the Bodeans, and Saturday night with Ice Cube, but there are bands all day. A great free site if the weather is nice.

In case you're looking for free shows.... the New Music Tipsheet has put out a list. No badges.. no wristbands... no permission required...

I blogged about it:
http://www.seanclaesdotcom.blogspot.com/

There's also the Texas Rockfest... which the magazine that I'm Managing Editor of is sponsoring... 5 stages, 4 venues, 150 bands, all free. It kicks off tonight with a killer metal show at The Spill on 6th Street.
Here's the entire schedule:
http://do512.com/event/2008/03/14/te...120-bands-free

Happy shooting!
If you get any good shots of Texas Rockfest... or any other free show... I may be able to publish it in the April issue of INsite... I can't pay.. but I will give photo credit. Let me know sean@insiteaustin.com

Cool, my computer was on the blitz last night (so I couldn't check on this topic), so I got more shots of the capital building. I may head over to some of the areas mentioned after getting a bite soon

No problem.. I'll be at the Guitar Hero III stage (outdoors... 7th and Trinity) at 7:30p.m. tonight to shoot Mike Truth and the Replacement Killers.

How about we all meet there and get this guy some amazing shots?
Mike Truth is former lead singer of Rubberhed... and a GREAT friend to bands in Austin (he has booked at several locations in town and currently books Red Eyed Fly).

I'd love to surprise him with some amazing photos of his performance.

I'll be the guy in the "More Cowbell" t-shirt.
