90 Minutes this Morning - 04-27-2008, 09:33 AM

Woke up early, as usual. Turned on the computer and it tells me a storm is going to be here in less than 15 minutes. Looked outside and could see the clouds on the horizon. Threw on some clothes, grabbed my camera and ran to the car and the clouds were on top of me and it was starting to sprinkle. The sun wasn't up, yet, but would be soon, so I headed southeast of town to see if I could get in front of the storm and catch anything interesting. I did find some wild animals that will be worth returning and taking photos of on a drier day, but nothing really special. It was a fun 90 minutes out and about.

I'm going back to bed, now, and catch up on my much needed (and required) beauty rest.

Directions to the Texas Disposal Systems (TDS)

Exotic Game Ranch and Pavilion

From Austin:
Take IH-35 South to Exit #223 (FM 1327). Turn left onto FM 1327. Go 3.3 miles east of IH-35 and take a left on Carl Road (past the main landfill entrance). Proceed 8/10 mile. The ranch entrance will be on your left immediately past the old cemetery.

From San Antonio:
Take IH-35 North to Exit #223 (FM 1327). Turn right onto FM 1327. Go 3.3 miles east of IH-35 and take a left on Carl Road (past the main landfill entrance). Proceed 8/10 mile. The ranch entrance will be on your left immediately past the old cemetery.

I love driving by that area. We've seen antelope, various deer, bison, and ostriches.

Wow, that's awesome. I had no idea this place existed. I know what I'll be doing soon. And kudos for getting up that early for those photos.

BTW, is there a fee charged? I didn't see anything about cost or hours. I assume morning or evening would be when the animals are most active.

That, so far, is the unanswered question. I have no idea. Would be a blast to get out there and shoot from inside the fence. The fence on the outside has large openings, which will easily accomadate the largest of lens. Biggest problem I noticed was a minimal right of way on the side of the road. It either is very steep or next to non existant in most places. Also, what little right of way was there, didn't look safe enough to park on after a rain, if you didn't want to have to call a wrecker to pull you out.

Looks like we're out of luck. Their site talks about visitors, but that's misleading. Here's an e-mail I got back:

"Our Game Ranch is not open to the public for tours. We do merge with
the City of Creedmoor in October for a day of tours through the game
ranch using chartered buses. You might want to watch for the
Oktoberfest signs that Creedmoor puts up in September."

Edit - I did ask about a group tour, but I guess they're not having any of it!
