I do a very basic class up here in DFW now and again...

Your best bet would probably to look into continuing ed classes at UT Austin... or see if your local camera shop has a class.

It isn't Austin, but I just signed up for a class at the Camera Exchange here in San Antonio

Thanks for the replies. I did find one in South Austin that would be great. But.... that's a bit of a drive for me so I'm still going to look around and try to find one closer.

Austin Community College has probably the best photography program in the state for a two year college.

The class I found is through ACC Continuing Ed. I'm debating whether or not I want to go with Con. Ed. or take the classes for credit.

You might also try UT's Informal Classes.

One on One tutoring - 01-03-2009, 07:01 PM

I've had some experience teaching basic photograpy (some at the University level), I've done some one-on-one tutoring here in Austin lately. Usually I can spend about 2-3 hours with the person and get them understanding the photographic concepts (what all the numbers mean) and applying them in some photos. Let me know if you're interested or have any questions, I'd love to help. Andy@AndyEllis.net
Cheers!

You can always try Precision Camera at 3810 N Lamar Blvd. They have been around for a long time and seem to be big on customer service.

I took a class for CE at NorthLake college in Irving and it was a great experience. In the class there where a couple of students taking it for a grade. The only difference in the class was how much they paid compared to what i paid.

Try Daugherty Arts Center in Austin. I am enrolled in a class there. I have a friend that took the class and she said it is fantastic! It is an evening course that is 5 weeks. It could get you started.

One more place not mentioned yet. Austin Museum of Art Laguna Gloria has classes. It's been a few years, but I took a hand coloring class there. It's north, but only slightly (35th St.). Looks like a fairly comprehensive course list now, here: http://theartschool.amoa.org/index.c...bCategoryID=10

I live in Round Rock and I just finished taking the intermediate continuing education class at ACC Northridge off Metric. I skipped the beginner class. No point in taking it for credit if you don't need it. Keep in mind the credit classes are a lot longer and during the day. You have to pay OUT OF DISTRICT fees too with the credit classes if you do not live in Austin. You do not get a student ID with the continuing ed. classes if you wanted that for some discounts.

The continuing ed. classes are good especially because they have facilities with computers for you to work on the post processing side and lighting, etc. to do studio work. You will learn general photography such as aperature, shutter, focal length, ISO, etc. You will also learn Lightroom and how to create your catalog, organize photos and navigate the menu system, and how to print correctly (aspect ratio, etc.). In addition you will also learn some basic Photoshop (clone tool, retouch, etc.).

Some of this sounds advanced (or basic if you already use these products) but this is between both the beginner and intermediate classes which span 2 semesters. I recommend them if you are new to photography and want to learn post processing and the adobe products.

The other benefit is that you get student discounts at the academic superstore with your receipt (not student ID). I got Lightroom 2.0 for $98 and the Adobe Photoshop Design Premium for $340. You can't beat that.

Leander ISD is in district for ACC as well - and I think RRISD voted this past November to join so they should be in district soon as well. Much lower tuition for in district - it isn't just Austin anymore (Leander has been in district for over a decade).
