Let's not all forget that SXSW start on Friday the 13th, running through the 21st. Although it can be a little nuts, and everything, there will be lots of opportunities to shoot people and dress and everything else that you don't normally have the chance to. Who knows, there may even be some chances to get shots of celebrities.
For you 80's fans, I know that DEVO is both performing (Friday March 20th at Austin Musiic Hall) and speaking Thursday the 19th at Austin Convention Center.

Get your cameras ready to shoot something a little different......

Just got this one published. SXSW was awesome this year for me. Excellent shooting opportunities and the networking was amazing.

Arnold,
Nice shots, as I shot all week, and I know first hand how difficuklt some of the venues were for adequate lighting.

Evey once in a while a cherished belief has to get obliterated in order to get the shots. SXSW killed a couple for me this year. I love shooting in the pit close up with a standards lens. My 50mm 1.4 is great for this in really low light situations. There were several times though (like Metallica where I was not even in the pit) where I had to put on my only long lens and deal with a 5.6 minimum aperture. As a result my belief in using huge aperture and low ISO (200) had to go bye bye. I shot Metallica at 1600 ISO and made darn sure to get the exposure right. But with changing light conditions its just nuts any way.

I shot in this one bar for a band that had come to town for the Red Gorilla fest and the place was a black hole. All light, even flash just seemed to disappear. I ended up telling the band I wont put my name on photos shot in that place. we ended up doing some shots outside instead.
