Beginning photo classes in Austin - 05-14-2009, 05:39 AM

Other than Precision Camera, is there any place a beginner can learn digital photography basics in a class in Austin? My sister in law, whom I gave by D70 and later D80 wants to learn more than shooting in "Auto" mode.

BTW the Advanced B&W class at Precision is taught by Dr. Michael Roach, who was my photo professor at SFA back in 1979-1982!!!! Smoley Hokes batman! Good guy, good photographer, eccentric teacher. Back then he really knew his stuff.

Check the Informal Classes from UT. There's quite a few classes there.

Hey, I'll be your brother-in-law if you're giving away digital bodies after they are all used up and obsolete.

ACC has very good facilities and classes. There is a beginner and intermediate class in their Continuing Education program. You will work on MacPro's using Lightroom and Photoshop. You will learn camera basics (aperature, shutter, etc.) and will get to use remote flash equipment in their studio.

They are once a week for an entire semester. Class runs for about 3-4 hours. I highly recommend them as they keep you doing camera stuff at least once a week.

Instructor's last name is Rizzo.

Check out Dougherty Arts Center Adult classes. I am on the 5th week of a 6 week (3 hrs every thurs eve) DSLR class. The instructor is great - a professional photographer. And - guess what - the total price is $145.00. I am a newbie and after 3rd class I started shooting in manual mode only...

I second the ACC add. Rizzo is the man. I took the first two classes. all I needed for now. I would like to go back and do some more, but who has the time?

I wanted to take more too but I don't think there are any other photography specific classes beyond the beginner and intermediate last I checked. Several of us wanted to do a specific Photoshop class after a substitute teacher came in and knocked all our socks off with her abilities. No classes unless you take the daytime credits that the full times do. More expensive and there is a path to the classes.

Actually they have a full program now with 2 paths. Product/Commercial applications and portrait/people stuff. I just was spread too thin between family and work. you can not just take the camera class. the photo shop stuff is the lab.

I too worked the Fashion/Advertising route at ACC. Fantastic resources, great program. I can't say enough nice things about it. I do wish they'd start a little earlier on the business/legal/copyright side of professional photography. I've met a few folks who came out of there feeling vastly underprepared for the "real world".

I took a B&W darkroom class through the Austin Museum of Art about 3 years ago. It was short and not cheap, but it was enough to get me hooked on shooting and developing my own B&W film. They have other non-film related photo classes too.
