Jason,
May I suggest www.Guru.com?

I am finding it hard to allot time for a tri-fold brochure design. I went on guru.com, explained what I wanted, the range I wanted to spend, and in two days, I had received 18 quotes for the work. You even get to determine how long you'll accept quotes. The quotes ranged from $69.00 to $229.00.

I have pretty much made my decision, but will wait until next week, in case someone comes along with a better presentation than my favorite so far. This firm is giving me a letterhead, business card re-design, will offer new logo suggestions, and tri-fold brochure with unlimited changes until I am satisfied for @229.00. I have received several quotes that were very impressive, with very good work samples attached. Guru.com also has a thing set up to pay for the work that ensures you get what you pay for.

Just my .02....

Ugh... I really don't like those free for all bidding type sites, I don't see how anyone can make money off those quotes for the amount of hours spent doing the work. I'd suggest searching for a freelancer that does work that you like and explain what you want and ask for a quote.

Just like in photography, you get what you pay for.

I do freelance graphic design myself, if you're interested PM me.

Melissa,
Please don't misinterpret what I say here...
When I started reading your post, I thought you were going to offer an opinion on the usefulness of a site such as Guru.com. After I read your entire post, I was disappointed. I am not sure who will give credence to your opinion when you suggest "ugh" about something such as Guru.com, and then tout your own ability and availability to do the same work.
If your intention was to offer your skills, why didn't you just do that?

I offered the information to Jason in the forum instead of a PM because I thought someone else could potentially use the information as well as Jason. That is why we share information in these forums. I know that Jason is a hard working young man, and believed he might find the information useful.

I don't believe your tainted expression helped anything. Your offer would have had much greater standing, if you had simply offered him your services and not disparaged someone else that may do $250,000 a year on Guru.com.

Respectfully,

I was just stating my opinion, take it or leave it. The sites like Guru.com are kind of the equivalent to people posting overly cheap photography services on craigslist. I'm just trying to point out that with cheap design services (like cheap photography services) you get what you pay for.

I did not mean to offend.

Oh jeez, here we go again.

Melissa... just give up like I have. There is no point. Just offer your services and leave it at that.

Oooooo look, Guru, com has a section where I can find a photographer. A applaud Jason for looking for a designer that is recommended, not just a recommendation of where to find a designer. I would be interest in hearing your thoughts and seeing the results after your project is completed. These sites are not my cup of tea either, but I'd like to keep an open mind.

I don't understand. Are these folks showing you spec. designs of your project or just their prior work?

Nick,
Thank you for posting the link to no-spec.com.
It was interesting reading. Admittedly, I had no pre-conceived thought about using or abusing a graphic artist's ability/talent. I was simply looking for an opportunity to have a tri-fold brochure designed because I don't have the time/talent for it myself. While I probably could learn to do it, I prefer when possible to pay someone for what I need, rather than learn to create it myself if I don't know how to do it, or my time would be better used some other way. (I could change my oil for example, but find paying someone else to do it acceptable.)
I was in no way trying to argue or tick off Melissa, but did not interpret perhaps what she was actually attempting to comunicate.
Also, admittedly, I did not consider the idea that there was anyone on this forum that may also either be, or know a graphic artist that could provide what I am needing.
For that, I apologize. I was completely unaware that graphic artists are being abused by these sites. I did not for a moment consider that possibility. For those of you that took exception to my comments, I apologize.

I'll crawl back in my cave now........

Life's too short to hold grudges, I'm just glad you get it. It just seems to hurt more when other creatives are the culprits of some of this stuff. Fortunately, I can afford to say no to this type of work because I have a day job as an in-house designer.

Like my sister paying me only $50 to take pictures of her brass quintet group (which I really didn't want to do, but she begged me) and then gets mad when she asks me take pictures another time and I say no. She's a musician and should get it, but she doesn't. I'd rather have my free time than work for peanuts.
