Question What to do? - 05-27-2009, 08:40 PM

I was wondering if anyone shooting newborns had much luck with the baby body sock thingies? I think they are neat and I have a couple potential clients that are interested in them. Should I go for it? How well do those images sell? I know they can be expensive, and I am not sure what kind(s) to get. Any input?

Thanks!

If the client is interested, I think they should bring one with them. I don't find them cute at all. What is the point of taking newborn photos where you only see the head? You could do almost the same by just wrapping them tightly in a blanket. I want to see those cute little bodies, toes and fingers! But I have no clue what moms would want! It is not something I have seen other photographers use.

You can make yourself one easily. They have knitting rings at hobby lobby (a set of 4) for $12 or so, and then a ream of yarn for another $10. It takes maybe 2 hours to make (I do it during primetime).

As far as the images selling, I don't see why they wouldn't. It's a new way to show newborn photos and I believe that parents these days are looking for fresh new things. Additionally, if this is something you want to offer and it is part of your vision, don't be afraid to show it! People will buy you because of what you are not what you do. If you're shooting just to please them (not saying you are) and are only showing what you think they'll like, chances are you'll burn out fast. Just my opinion :)

Right now, I am willing to try things. If I don't like them, then I won't do them again. Still working on my vision, and finding my "place". I do want to step up my newborn images, right now I just do body parts and some with the family. Looking for new options, and was wondering if this is a worthwhile one.

Christie, do you have to know how to knit to make one? I have never knitted.

Thanks for your input!!!

If you're not feeling crafty, there are probably places to buy them, too.

Both of my boys were born in December (four years apart), and we've got the obligatory Christmas-stocking photos of them. They are truly gifts that keep giving.

no, you don't have to knit. the looks have these peg things and basically you just wrap the yarn around them twice, then pull the bottom loop over. the directions are included. it's easy peasy! good luck!

Christie: I might have to try it then. Any recommendation on what type of yarn to get?

Todd: My daughter was born in Dec as well, but the hospital gave me a blue stocking! I never used it, and I think I got rid of it. Never did get around to getting one of her. Oh well.

I'm not sure where any of the photos are; we have more candid ones on display in the house anyway!

My oldest was born Dec. 26; the youngest four years later on Dec. 11. My wife and I are both former journalists and not that good at math apparently.

pam, I think anything with good texture will work. I'm not a fan of the fringey stuff, but that's just my personal taste.

Thanks so much for this thread! I have a newborn that I'm waiting on any day, and I think I am going to have to stop by Hobby Lobby tonight and pick up the goods. Thanks so much Christie for the images and the suggestions!

You can usually pick those up on www.etsy.com check it out...there are a bunch of items there that can be used as props for infants and small children....

Christie - maybe you can help me on this one. I just got a call that a newborn I was scheduled for next month came early. She's 12 days now so I'm going to squeeze her in on my wedding related weekend this Saturday morning.

Which means... I havn't any props! Well sorta I have one basket, black velour and cream colored fluffly blanket. I could take new white clean towels to stack. A beanbag too of course.

Anyway - do you know of any boutiques here in town that carry cute hats or even gasp! cocoons? I had planned on spending some money on etsy next week - but I have no more time. Also, I went to Jo Anns looking for that white fur type stuff - but they'res was scratchy to say the least. Any leads on that?

Thanks!
