Signing Your Prints - 05-31-2009, 04:52 PM

Do you sign your prints? If so, where? on the back? on the front? on the border? pencil? pen? Or, do you only sign if you have a limited edition?

Unless you're speaking to celebrities (I'm not sure how many frequent this forum) I'm going to assume you're talking about landscape etc. photos?
I've never heard of signing a portrait of someone with the photog's name...
Sorry, just struck me as curious. I'd appreciate it if you could expound a bit...

Thanks Daniel, this link: http://www.texasphotoforum.com/forum...ad.php?t=51803 was very helpful. I did search this forum first before asking. Maybe it was under a different catagory. Thanks again.

Wow, I wasn't aware that people signed photo prints of people. That's a new one to me.
Do you use your name or studio name? Website?

If its being sold as art - then sign it. I tend to sign stuff larger than 8x10. I used to hide my signature in my paintings. On prints, I tend to just sign my name and put 09 after it. Its on the front bottom rt hand corner. Used to sign whole name. Now I just sign it 'Holly09'.

I'm a nature photographer, so I sign my prints on the bottom right corner along with the date (year).

I don't sell portraits. For some of the landscape prints that I've gifted (and hope to eventually sell if I get around to it), I put the title, year taken, and my signature on the back of the print using an archival pigment ink pen. If the print was matted and mounted I'd also sign the mat, but I think it makes sense to put your signature on the print itself since the mat could be replaced/removed.

I could see signing on the front if you have enough border, but I usually print 16" wide images on 17" wide paper, so there's not really room. I wouldn't sign in the actual print area, but that's just me.

All my print sales have been to friends who usually insist I sign them. I use some archival paint pens. I forget which brand but Hobby Lobby and Barnes & Noble sell them.
