btw - I think Glam Shots, Sears, and gfb maybe even WalMart may pay some photogs better than they pay themselves. GASP! I know, right? I went there. Not to hijack the thread or anything, but whats up with all the snarky comments lately?
Awhile back, the photo hole-in-the-wall in my closest Wally Mart had a "Now Hiring" sign in front of it. I turned to My Lovely Bride and made a snarky comment about what a low-rent job THAT must be. About a month later, I met one of our TPF friends whose work I really admire (she'll remain nameless only because I haven't asked her permission to post about her work history), and she said she got a bit of a start working at Wal Mart, and that she actually learned some stuff there.

I quickly repented of that particular snarky comment.

I have this great opportunity for you if you want into photography, its called Combat Camera, where you can learn just about everthing there is to know about photo, even video and graphic design FOR FREE. You'll even be in the best shape of your life.

All you have to do is sign this dotted line, go through 13 weeks of absolute hell, then get 10 days of relaxation, go to some more combat training and then you can go and take a full 3 months of just about ALL aspects of photo. (though they did take out film a few years back) Let me know when you finally decide to join and i can hook you up.

Is that for real 84young? lol, I am not good at reading people's expression on forum

tuabanget added 4 Minutes and 36 Seconds later...Double Post Merged Below

on the side note about getting start in photography.
What i learned through my journey is, invest in knowledge and portfolio. Get the knowledge the way you learn the best, for example if you learn the best by seeing someone else then offer to assist other photog for experience, if you learn the best by watching movie, there are bunch of video on youtube you can watch.
On the job side, I too been unlucky in finding jobs in Houston (even franchise studio like glamour, walmart, etc) but keep believing and doing!

I am being both sarcastic and serious. I am a combat photo in the Marine Corps. I just don't know if you want to join the military as a photo guy.

84young, although I would love to be able to photograph in intense and remote areas that come with being in the military, I couldn't do that to my wife. Her dad just retired from the Marines and although she loves the corps, she said should would only consider letting me join the Air Force. Something about being a bunch of pansies and such.

I too have been turned down, or just passed over, for franchise photog jobs. Which I find quite wierd since they usually say no experience needed and I have customer service experience. Oh well.
