Projector Suggestions - 06-28-2009, 02:47 PM

Ok So I don't get it. I understand that the brighter the lumens the less dark the room has to be and you want a high contrast ratio but I just don't understand the difference between a $400 & $2000 projector when they both have the same lumens.
I was thinking this looked like a good deal Viewsonic Projector

Is it possible to get a good one for $400 - $600?
Any tips or advice!?
Thanks

The resolution matters for clarity; 720p v 1080i v 1080p. 4x3 or widescreen. 600x800 or 1280x????

Usage: home theater? Showing photographs to clients? powerpoint for business?

Life of lamps. lamp bulb replacement cost. How far will you be projecting the image? How large of a picture do you need?

No much help, but these are some of the differences between the cost of the projectors.

Think of projector likes as monitor display, there's more than brightness and contrast--there's panel resolution, color gamut and accuracy.

What does you get from expensive monitor? Color accuracy and wider color gamut. But in projector, especially a business class one for presentation where ambient is presented, you also need both contrast and brightness max out in D65, color temperature. The low end models are based in dynamic mode with wacky color.

April, I have to agree with the two statements above....

The first question is where and how are you using this....and do you need it to be mobile..??

My second question is what budget are you wanting to put on this...??

From this you should be able to figure out what is going to be the best one for you....

Let us know the answers to these questions and maybe we can point you in the right direction.....

It will be used for projecting photos of their event or photo shoot. I would really like to have it mobile as I am hoping to have a portrait viewing party with friends and such at their house so I can come, show my goods and leave....thats the thought anyway.
Right now I want to keep it under $600 but if I'm just wasting my money then I'll just wait until I earn some more... Catch 20...projector helps you sale more.

Talk to the other photographers in Lubbock about what they are using and how it is working out for them. I'm sure Mark McCall, or Tina Thompson would be willing to help. And Don Dickson isn't all that far away. Or may be Cory or Val. Use your local resources.

2000 lumens minimum. That's the most important thing if you are in a lit room (or, heaven forbid outdoors, then 2500+ is recommended). Most projectors are 1080 nowadays or XGA which is fine for what you want. There is a lot to choose from under $1200. I would reseach lamp replacement cost as this can vary greatly (and always have a spare). $600 bucks is probably going to be a minimum.

Color accuracy should be just as important as lumens.

After you've followed Don Barnes advice and have an idea what specs you are looking for, check out the Projector People.

Woot.com runs deals on projectors frequently. Keep an eye out.
