Looking to learn in San Antonio - 07-09-2009, 03:09 AM

I've loved photography and have been taking photos as long as I've been able to hold a camera. My dream has been to have a career in photography. Growing up in Chicago I had planned to attend Columbia University and follow a career in photojournalism. However, I joined the military and Uncle Sam had different ideas. Now that I'm done serving and working full time, my current job and family obligations make it near impossible to just quit and start my dream job. I'm looking for an established photographer or studio that is in need of an assistance (no pay) that I can apprentice with. Please drop me a PM if you can help. Thanks

might help to find some studios that you would like to work with and either call or go there in person to ask. takes more time, but you will most likely get better results. plus you will be more or less choosing who you work with and what you want to learn.

or...you could get lucky here. good luck either way!

You should come to the Austin shoot out. There will be a lot of portrait photographers there and it's not too far away. Plus you can practice!!!

Ive found you are more likely to get some photog to take you under his/her wing once they know you a little bit. I think everyone is afraid they'll say yes and get a schmuck. Maybe thats just me. lol. Ive had lots of interns. The ones who managed more face time usually hold my attention longer and end up getting more help.

I would suggest that you start attending the Professional Photographers Guild of San Antonio http://www.ppgsa.org/ and make some connections there. I know a lot of the members and most of them are great people willing to help. It may take several meetings to convince them that you are in it for the duration. If you can afford it join the guild and volunteer to help with a project or two.
