Making .PDF pamphlets? - 07-17-2009, 02:22 PM

I've seen many photogs put their price list(s) in pamphlet style layouts and have them available for download on their website for their clients.
My question is: How do you make a .PDF file? Do you use photoshop, save as a JPG or what?

Thanks

Most desktop publishing programs will let you save as a PDF file. If yours doesn't do that, there are some free .pdf converters available on the web.

I use the Adobe full software.
If you happen to have office 2007, it will convert to pdf for you.

Also if you have Photoshop, you can design it and save it (psd or jpg - doesn't matter) and then in Bridge go to "Tools -> Photoshop -> PDF presentation" and it will make a pdf for you as well. Just make sure you pick the "Multi-Page Document" and not "presentation" option.

I have a mac, and i have office '04 on it. I used iWeb just today, but it won't save it as a .pdf...
I think I'll try Mel's approach. Thanks peeps!

Any other easier ways with Mac's?

Macs have PDF support built in. You can create a PDF file from almost anything, including web pages. Just print the document, but when the print dialog box comes up, click the PDF drop down on the lower left, and select "Save as PDF...". Or you can select to generate the PDF and open it in the "preview" app from that same drop down.

I haven't used iWeb recently, but I'm sure "print to PDF" works in that app. It works in almost every application running on the Mac

I use this print to PDF feature a ton. It's one of my favorite features of Mac OS X. Anytime I order something from the web, I always just save my invoice as PDF.

[edit: In some apps, like photoshop, you won't see this option on the APPLICATION print dialog. You have to click print from that dialog, then you get the native OS print dialog. THEN you will see the PDF drop down. ]

I posted the same question on MacRumors and after someone told me what you just did, I felt like an iDiot...

I see this feature all the time when I print things, but I never clicked it. Sweet feature. I'm so going to plunder this feature.
In other news: I just found another reason to fall in love with my Mac all over again...

Thanks y'all!

With a Mac, just select print and then in the lower left corner of print dialog box select save as PDF.

I use iWork which has tri-fold templates but you can do them in MSWord or MSPowerPoint.

It's not just a Mac thing (i hate to rain on the fanboy parade), it's available free from a ton of sources for real computers too....I've had various versions on PCs for eons. It shows up as one of your printers: select it, it does it.

Ouch!
But computer wars aside, I used the adobe bridge method. Made a multi page document and it worked like a charm. Looks great too.
Thanks again for the help guys. And yeah, it's available for PC's too-if you can get through all the viruses and freezes...

The one we use at work is called PDFcreator. I made a bifold, 6 panel double-printed full color brochure with pics and all, in Word, then just PDF'd it. I learned to appreciate folks that do this stuff routinely.....my Dad was still living and he helped a lot with layout and aesthetics.

The funny part was that the PDF was only for the documentation system here, the print house (in this case Kinko's) worked with the original .DOC file just fine.

Apple? Virus?

On my work PC, I have Adboe Professional. I can save a document as a PDF or print to a PDF service that has distiller installed. Through Windows XP, there was no native PDF converter but plenty of add-ons. Vista may have a built in PDF converter.

At home I run a Mac, since 10.3, and there was always a built in PDF converter in the operating system. All I stated was simply how to access that feature.

Sam, congrats on getting the document you wanted in PDF form. Great work!

And if you get really slick with your contracts and forms, you can create dynamic forms that can be filled in and emailed back to you so that a client doesn't have to print them out and fill them in by hand :)

Does anyone know anything about the compression on the .PDF's? The file I currently have is 2.6MB, not very small...It's about 4 pages total.
I used a layout template for a tri-fold brochure and did it based on that. But all the different compression options got me confused.
