Too many clients want it for little or nothing. Until photographers stand up and ask their worth, it will only continue. Those same too many clients also know there is someone out there that will bite at the offer of only seeing their name in lights i.g... credit or opportunity.

That's pretty priceless. Love the point about someone offering "publicity" in exchange for free work ... photographers do the same thing for a tiny photo credit that nobody but them and their moms see or care about in most cases. I guess if the writer got any publicity from this interview, it was the fact that he might be a little hard to work with.

Writing is sometimes a tougher sell than photography because it takes less equipment. A misguided person can believe buying a fancy camera will be the one thing that improves their photography. Few people think a new typewriter will make them better writers, but without the tangible link to the intangible talent, writers are often undervalued simply because people think writing is about stringing sentences together. And "anybody" can apparently do that.

As an amateur I have to agree with his assessment of amateurs. I, however, am not trying to sell portraits, pretend I'm a wedding photog, or anything else. In my chosen field of work, I have used the same line. I wouldn't take a piss without getting paid.
