Question Velvet Wall Paper - 07-25-2009, 04:27 PM

so say im gonna get me some velvet wall paper to use as a backdrop for my boudoir studio.

This kinda stuff.

well, question #1 - is there anything cheaper that looks the same? Most of these papers are $100 a roll.

Then question #2 - any tips for not sucking up the wall paper when I do it?

I was hoping to put the paper onto canvas so I could roll it up when Im not using it. Is that stupid? I was wondering if Id have issues with it adhering correctly.

PS - the boudoir took off like wild fire and ive only given it a nudge so far. i had a client camped outside my door this morning, waiting to book her session. awesome!!!

#1 Fabric is cheaper at $9-15 a yard I have purple with gold and gold with black so far
#2 put the paste on the wall or other surface and have help
#3 you can put it on canvas or seamless paper. 3m makes a spay on glue that I know would work on paper. I don't know about the canvas. BUt I know that there is glue that will glue fabric together. But I don't recall the name.

thank jancie! i was thinking about fabric or stenciling. i can do lots of complex finishes, just wondering if the paint sheen would make it look ghetto?

and there is just something all swank about velvet.

Check out some large local supplier or paint store type operation. They always have something in the discontinued bid for cheap...

no sheen use matt paint!
what if you mounted it on those large sheets of insulation? You could put 4 together and then just move them out of the way when you want a different look. That would be 8x16ft if you did that.

ebay has some for 34.99 a double roll

If you have a local theater in Abilene, find out if the theater director has some spare time, and would tackle building you some prop walls. They can build them so that they roll in and out, and you could paper one side, and paint the other (and repaint and repaint and paint again) to your hearts content.

The theater director in those smaller theaters can usually do amazing things with what they find at home depot, and they will be reusable and recyclable as well

Go visit Ikea.

Ikea has these sliding panel contraptions that they sell - that are designed to specifically hold... guess what... FABRIC!!! ;-)

You can build your own 'sliding walls'... it's pretty cool!

So next week when you are in Austin. Go visit. They also have velvet curtains that would work! (very inexpensive)

tah dah! new background! I ended up using velvet patterned fabric on this one and got a duvet cover that was super cool for another background. That one is a little more showy. I'll have to post it in human forum later. Thanks for the suggestion on looking for fabric.

If you go with the portable wall or any wall for that matter, take a tip I learned in Community Theater. We NEVER pasted wallpaper up. We stapled it up.
The staples won't show, and you don't have to deal with any kind of mess. If you are careful in stapling you can remove the staples, roll up the paper and store it for later use.

thanks everyone for the tips. i wanted the moldings on the bottom of the fabric, so it was a little tricky this time. im gonna buy a chunkier molding and staple the fabric to that on the bottom and make the top tack/ or pin onto the wall. Thought that would be easier for storage too. it held it taught enough, so that was cool.

thanks for the comments.

ive been having fun shooting stuff. ;o) <--- there are only a limited number of people who can say that. lol.
