Just getting started - 08-11-2009, 12:36 PM

I would like to start a part-time business, and need some advise. I want to build up my experience and portfolio, and wondering what the best way is to do that.

I want to send a marketing email out to family and friends. I am thinking of offering them a 'special' session price so I can gain experience and build my portfolio.

Should I:

1. Offer to take pictures for free, and just charge them for photos they might want

2. Offer them a special price session price (like half off of what I would normally charge in the future in exchange for them being my models)

3. Other?

i would suggest many things. first and foremost would be to join PPA so you are doing things correctly (or as much as possible) from the start.

I would also caution you from doing things for free. the main problem is if they are happy with their pictures, they will give you referrals at the price you offer them ($0). Unless you build in some incentive for them not to tell.

Looking at your blog and website, it seems like most of the kids on there are close to you (most likely your own). I would again caution you from putting your younglings on your business blog.

I would do more of #2. I would set my prices (search the forum) and then offer close family and friends a free session. that way you can get some variety in people and locations. then i would build in a referral system that they get an 8x10 or something for every person who books at full price. and get an album made. and anything you plan to sell, you should have hanging on your wall.

suggestions

1- register your part time business with whatever legal steps are required in your county.
2- get liability insurance and equipment insurance
3- Figure out what you would do if your camera stopped working in the middle of a session, flash, lens, cards, batteries, tripods, etc. etc.
4- find out if there are small business seminars in your area and attend.
5- attend the numerous photography business seminars in your area.
6- take your first paid photo.

Most people put no. 6 first. It's like trying to fly a plane without any instruction first. Maybe you get lucky but likely you'll just end up a heap of quivering goo.

+1 on Tom's list, but if you're operating a business in Texas you must also collect and remit sales tax to the state. That's a given. Info.: http://www.window.state.tx.us/taxinfo/sales/

I just got an email from These Guys and thought it must be a sign that I needed to send it on to you.

I have a dba, and tax ID. Need to look into getting insurance, and having a back up plan in case of equipment failure.

Outside of photography, I do have a MBA, so somewhat familiar with regular business practices. I definitely need to look it photography business seminars, and workshops.

I've previously read some of the articles on the PPA site, and subscribed to their magazine, but I do need to join to get the additional benefits. Been also doing research on pricing, and other things.

I've been reading a lot of books and joined a local photography club. I just need to find different subjects other than my family/kids.

I think I will send an email out to close family and friends, and offer them one free session and provide as an incentive a free print for any referrals at full price.

Any other advise or articles are so appreciated!!

It looks like you are heading in right direction. Just a few personal observations.

I am going to disagree with Conor. Having been a member of PPA for thirty years and knowing that it is a great organization I don't recommend joining it now unless you plan to do weddings and/or your business can really afford the annual dues

You will get a lot more bang for your buck by joining and attending the monthly meetings of DPPA. Camera clubs are fine, but they are more about pretty pictures than business. Almost all of the members of professional groups are working photographers and can share ideas and experiences that will help your business grow. DPPA has been meeting near Plano at Swan Court, but is looking for a new site.

I would also suggest that you consider joining TPPA. For your $85.00 annual dues you will get free admission to the annual convention. The 2009 convention will be next month in Arlington.

When you business begins to take off would be the time to join PPA.

of course, if you join ppa (can do so for your first year at a discounted rate) then you get some liability insurance with the membership. also, you can insure your equipment at "reasonable" prices, but there have been some moaning about the level of service.

I HATE email (and crazy people who offer advice on the world wide web :)). I would call family and friends or talk to them face to face.

Touche. Agreed. But let's define what Liz means by "part-time." No discussion needed here, but there is a fit-for-purpose org that will work for whatever her needs are. Excellent point Don.
