Print Competition Question - 08-20-2009, 06:57 PM

Not sure where to put this so mods feel free to move...

I understand that I need to have my entry mounted on a 16x20 board and that it can take any shape/size within that space. I'm submitting an 8x12 on the 16x20.....Is there supposed to be any kind of stroke around the image? Or do I just plop it in the middle of the 16x20 with white space all around?

Most entries will use a complimentary color border to the edge and probably a stroke to show where the image ends. Some even use an OOB image. You might want to look at a few PPA Loan Collection books to see what others have done.

If I were judging and a 8X12 image on a 16X20 mount came across the turnstile I would wonder why such a small image? Is it out of focus if enlarged more? It would have to be a killer image to overcome those kind of thoughts by a judge. PM me if you have more questions.

The only contest I've enver entered had rules for entry as a 16x20 mount with the mounting board displayed with the 20 inch side vertical, no exceptions. That might be the case with the original poster.

Rex, you bring up a good point. If, however, that is not the case then I would recommend an 11x14 on at 16x20 mount.

Also, some contests want the photo on the foamcore and nothing else. No, mat, no border, and just use some double side tape to mount the photo.

Here is the original image in question:

As you can see, I didn't want to be forced into cropping it. Following the advice Don gave me, I changed it to this:

Any further suggestions?

Mica, Is the a PPA guild competition that you are working on? If so I would go with ANY advise Don gives since he judges at our guild.

It's for the convention next month in Arlington....though now I am considering whether or not I have enough images to enter to make it worth the costs....Wish I had been able to attend the print comp meeting they had last Sunday but I was at the PPA SMS seminar in Irving.
