Cool Wierd Rambling: Logo/Personality Conflict - 08-29-2009, 11:16 PM

Hopefully I'll explain this in a reasonably intelligent manner - at Texas School - the class I attended was on branding/logo/identity, etc. One of the things they talked about was how your 'logo' and your 'marketing' material really needed to 'match' you.

If your warm and fluffy - you want 'texture' and 'swirlies' ... if your more 'corporate' you want slick paper/corporate feel.

I love my logo - but I'm not really a 'corporate' kind of person/personality. I'm more a girl next door, bare feet, pony tail, old jeans, kicked back - relaxing with you while we get images while we chat....

I'm trying to really set a standard for my marketing pieces, etc - and am running into this 'brick wall' that really has to do with self perception, more than anything...

I don't want to deceive clients into thinking they are getting this ubber sophisticated person as a photographer... I'm growing in confidence in my skills... but I realized today during the session I was doing.... that 'who I am'... is just as much of a selling point, as my skills behind a camera.

I'm going to make people relax... and kick off their shoes.. and laugh. I'm 'not' slick... or corporate feeling... I'm low key...although my logo is... I love my logo...lol...

Sandy Puc showcased her studio - it's new - and I really started thinking about getting to that point - what would it be like. How would I want it to look... what would be my 'style'... and does it work with what I'm doing now.

I've seen images from some of the photographers.. of their studios... and some of them REALLY fit their style - clean lines, minimalistic furniture, track lighting... it fits their logo/shooting style...

does any of this make sense to anyone, or am I one leaf shy of a full head of lettuce? ;-)

Your logo is not formal at all so I am not sure why you are worried about it. The font is rather casual. The lack of capitalization makes it informal and your whimsical camera shape made from your initials is casual. The colors also are bright and fun. If you had used a formal font or a callligraphic font then I would see your concern. I find your logo casual, which sound exactly like where you want to head with your persona.

BTW, don't let all the speakers make your head swim. You will soon find that you are switching lanes every time to leave a class. Find your lane and then take small pieces from everyone but don't allow them to make your mind melt.

Donna,
I think your logo does say fun-quirky, and think it fits the style you describe very well.

I know your studio could also have that fun but casual style (which is the look my wife went for at our home) - using warm tones, natural materials brick, wood, and choosing fabrics and textures that say "come in, relax, put your feet up - just not on the table".

As you're proceeding, let me know if we can be of any help!

I know it's hard to express fun and relaxed, but at the same time professional. That's how I see myself. I want everyone to actually enjoy the process of having their portraits taken by me, but feel confident that the results will be of good quality. I'm not afraid to get down on the floor and get dirty, or climb a tree to get the shot.

All that being said, I like your logo. I think if you like it, it probably does fit your personality. Does it feel like you?

I see nothing wrong with your logo. I think that as you grow it could be modified to a LITTLE more upscale with out changing it much. But I would not change it too much. I could see you designing a studio that would work as fun but, still classy and use that logo.
I guess I am trying to say "You are not broke, so don't try and fix it!"

Thanks everyone for the feedback - ya'll are all right. Arthur - thanks for pointing out the lack of capital letters... and it is kind of quirky.... and funky....

I wasn't planning on messing with it... lol... just trying to make sure it 'fits'... *grin*
