Photographer's Insurance - 09-02-2009, 04:12 PM

Does anyone here have their equipment insured and with who? I may start shooting football at my son's school and can't afford to replace if my gear gets damaged or broken, plus if I get hurt. Thanks in advance for any input!

I'm insured through PPA.

It's your liability that I'd worry about most....

Yes, worry about liability ins to most. If you own a home or have appt ins your equipment should be covered. If so, check into Liability insurance.

I dont believe your home or renters insurance will cover your equip if it is being used for business.

Also, I found this in a thread here as well about insurance - http://www.nanpa.org/equipment_insurance.php

Which sports are you wanting to shoot for Plano? Which schools? HS football? East, West, PSH?

I'll be shooting Shepton - I'm already "official" with the band, since my son plays the clarinet. I thought I'd try to get permission for shooting the game too, since I"m going to be there anyway. I'm just worried about my gear getting damaged/broken or me getting injured.

I just did all the paperwork for shooting at the schools here in my area...they require you to have a minimum of one million liability.

I'm working on insurance now! I had a nice long chat with PPA, they invited me to join, but geez, I feel like that may be out of my league. I don't consider myself to be "THAT" professional! I do photography mainly because I love it and yep, I like a good challenge. I don't know where I stand when it comes to my skills. I do have a website, but that's about all it is. If ya'll wanna look here it is

Here in lies the problem....once you begin taking money you are officially considered a professional photographer (I hate that name!!!) Which means you can no longer use your home owners insurance (legally). So you are too big for the hobby and not big enough for the pro level...you are left floundering for awhile or being illegal. You need to decide if this is really where you want to go .....

Well, I guess when it comes to accepting $$, I'm a pro then. I guess I could say I'm thinking about expanding my horizons. I have way too much $$ tied up in my gear to let it just remain a casual hobby. If you have a chance, look at my website and tell what YOU think.

Nice work Dianne. Your past amateur status now. Join PPA, its worth the while and you will get access to necessary legal forms for future events and good information about professional photography. Take the next step.

Thanks for the confidence. I'd like to join, but may not be able to afford it yet.

Out of curiosity, how much do they charge for liability and equipment insurance?
I know I could fill out this quote request, but I only want to get an idea without affidavit of means.
