I was reading through another thread here, which prompted me to recall a book I read over 20 years ago:
Color Portraiture by Paul Linwood Gittings, who, while not a Texan by birth, was a Texan by choice.
I've done some portraiture, but I really don't consider myself to be a portrait photographer. Doesn't matter. The book was an outstanding read, providing one with an intimate glimpse of what Paul Gittings did to build up
his studio from almost nothing to a major success. Gittings was one of the very first portrait photographers to use a dye-transfer process to bring color portraiture to is clientelle. I still recall being fascinated by his description of the process.
The information provided in his book is much more than a color portraiture guide, it's about how he built and ran a successful business. So if you're just starting out and you could do with some perspective from an old hand, I can highly recommend this book. It's out of print now, but I note that Amazon.com has some used copies available through its partners. Your local library may have a copy as well, or can probably get it through inter-library loan.
