TFP/TFCD is Time For Prints or CD. It means that you don't pay the model and they don't pay you.

I think the question is "What is everyone involved allowed to do with the product produced from a TFP/TFCD session?" Do I have that correct?

What is allowed is in your model release! So you decide what you want to do and put it in the release. You also have to decide what you will allow her to do she needs to be able to use it in her portfolio both online and in print.

What does TFP/TFCD mean?

Terrific Fun Perhaps and Too Frugal Certainly Dear.

Seriously. I've had many fruitful and productive sessions with 'models' on trade shoots. I've also had more flakes than I could ever count.

Rights? The model may print the images I provide for their own promotional use and portfolio. Use the images on their personal non-pay website or modeling portfolio site. That's all and it's spelled out explicitly in the model release that is signed before I snap one image. Also listed is some things that they cannot do with the images; sell them, use them on a pay site, modify them in ANY way, create a derivative work from them.

I also list what I cannot do with the images; use them on or sell them to a porn site or publication that would be degrading or otherwise cause hard to the model or her reputation. Other than that I retain ALL rights to the images and have no requirement to inform the model of their use or sale. Nor am I required to share any proceeds from such sales.

Of course, YMMV.

My experience here closely matches Scott's. I have done a number of trade sessions, with more than my fair share of flakes. I normally use the images for stock purposes, and I use the Getty standard model release, which you can see here. I have also an FAQ so that models know how it works. And before I shoot I explain to the model that the images will be made commercially available and we don't necessarily know for what purposes. This is really important because you don't want to surprise the model if they find their pictures on a brochure or something later.

I give the model a separate document stating the rights that the have with the license they get. I never give them unretouched images, and the number of images I provide is small, between 1 and 5 from a session.
